Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX up to 4.3.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file enq. The manipulation of the argument -M with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in enq command in IBM AIX 4.3.x and earlier may allow local users to execute arbitrary commands via a long -M argument.
The bug was discovered 12/01/2000. The weakness was disclosed 01/09/2001 by Esa Etelavuori (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2000-1121. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1698 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
