Summary
A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Red Hat Linux up to 7.2. Affected is an unknown function of the component Shell. The manipulation results in symlink. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2000-1134. Furthermore, an exploit is available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Red Hat Linux up to 7.2 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Shell. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple shell programs on various Unix systems, including (1) tcsh, (2) csh, (3) sh, and (4) bash, follow symlinks when processing << redirects (aka here-documents or in-here documents), which allows local users to overwrite files of other users via a symlink attack.
The weakness was published 10/28/2000 by Paul Szabo as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2000-1134. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by t--zen in ANSI C and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61861 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : bash1 (MDKSA-2000:075)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5593), Exploit-DB (217), Tenable (61861), SecurityFocus (BID 2006†) and OSVDB (14158†). Similar entry is available at VDB-16291. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
