Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.46 (Web Server). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component IPv6 FTP Proxy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Apache 2 before 2.0.47, when running on an IPv6 host, allows attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption by infinite loop) when the FTP proxy server fails to create an IPv6 socket.
The weakness was presented 07/09/2003 by Yoshioka Tsuneo with F-Secure (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0254 since 05/06/2003. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14058 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : apache2 (MDKSA-2003:075-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86562 (Miscellaneous Apache Vulnerabilities (2.0.46 and earlier)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
