A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 3.5.1/4.1/4.1.1/4.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function jail of the file procfs of the component CTL File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. procfs in FreeBSD and possibly other operating systems does not properly restrict access to per-process mem and ctl files, which allows local users to gain root privileges by forking a child process and executing a privileged process from the child, while the parent retains access to the child s address space.
The weakness was released 12/18/2000 by Joost Pol (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0061. The exploitation appears to be easy.
