Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Cluster 2.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file /var/opt/SUNWcluster/fm/fmstatus/nfs/<logicalhostname. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
in.mond in Sun Cluster 2.x allows local users to read arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the status file of a host running HA-NFS.
The weakness was disclosed 09/18/2001 by Dixie Flatline as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0078. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6125) and OSVDB (6437†). The entry VDB-16411 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
