Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.0/4.1 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Unicast Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Windows Media Unicast Service in Windows Media Services 4.0 and 4.1 does not properly shut down some types of connections, producing a memory leak that allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a series of severed connections, aka the "Severed Windows Media Server Connection" vulnerability.

The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2001 with NTT Communications as MS00-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2001-0083. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90003 (Microsoft Windows Media Services Severed Connection DoS Vulnerability (MS00-097)).

Applying the patch MS00-097 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5785), SecurityFocus (BID 2123†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-3969†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
