Kerberos on FreeBSD/NetBSD libkrb kdc_reply_cipher memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Kerberos on FreeBSD/NetBSD. Affected by this vulnerability is the function kdc_reply_cipher in the library libkrb. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2001-0094. There is no available exploit. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Kerberos on FreeBSD/NetBSD (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function kdc_reply_cipher in the library libkrb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in kdc_reply_cipher of libkrb (Kerberos 4 authentication library) in NetBSD 1.5 and FreeBSD 4.2 and earlier, as used in Kerberised applications such as telnetd and login, allows local users to gain root privileges.

The bug was discovered 12/08/2000. The weakness was presented 02/12/2001 by Jouko Pynnonen (FIRST) as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ftp.NetBSD.ORG. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2001-0094. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 66 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (5734), SecurityFocus (BID 2091†), OSVDB (4891†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7263†). See VDB-16422 and VDB-16445 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
