Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP SMB Parameter memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component SMB. Performing a manipulation as part of Parameter results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0345. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. Furthermore, an exploit is available. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP (Operating System). This affects an unknown code of the component SMB. The manipulation as part of a Parameter leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the SMB capability for Microsoft Windows XP, 2000, and NT allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via an SMB packet that specifies a smaller buffer length than is required.

The bug was discovered 01/01/2001. The weakness was published 07/09/2003 by Jeremy Allison Andrew Tridgell with Samba as MS03-024 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0345 since 05/28/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 919 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11787 (MS03-024: SMB Request Handler Buffer Overflow (817606)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70029 (Microsoft SMB Request Handler Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS03-024)).

Applying the patch MS03-024 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.microsoft.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12544), Tenable (11787), SecurityFocus (BID 8152†), OSVDB (11801†) and Secunia (SA9225†). Similar entries are available at VDB-167 and VDB-164. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
