Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Network Dynamic Data Exchange. Network Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) in Windows 2000 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via a "WM_COPYDATA" message to an invisible window that is running with the privileges of the WINLOGON process.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was presented 03/12/2001 with Microsoft as MS01-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 389 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying the patch MS01-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
