Network Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) in Windows 2000 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via a "WM_COPYDATA" message to an invisible window that is running with the privileges of the WINLOGON process.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was presented 03/12/2001 with Microsoft as MS01-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 389 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying the patch MS01-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
