A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in eXtropia BPS Forum 1.0 (Forum Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file bbs_forum.cgi. The manipulation of the argument file with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in eXtropia bbs_forum.cgi 1.0 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) attack on the file parameter.

The bug was discovered 01/03/2001. The weakness was released 01/07/2001 with isec as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com.
