A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache HTTP Server 1.3.14/2.0a9 (Web Server). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file /tmp of the component htpasswd/htdigest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
htpasswd and htdigest in Apache 2.0a9, 1.3.14, and others allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.
The weakness was shared 03/12/2001 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0131.
