A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise 6.5 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file GWVW02??.INI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Novell GroupWise 6.5 Client allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a GWVW02xx.INI language file with a long entry, as demonstrated using a long ES02TKS.VEW value in the Group Task section.
The bug was discovered 07/05/2005. The weakness was shared 07/27/2005 by Francisco Amato with Novell (Website). The advisory is available at support.novell.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2346 since 07/21/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:GWVW02??.INI it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
