A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ISC INN up to 2.2.3. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component innfeed. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in innfeed for ISC InterNetNews (INN) before 2.3.0 allows local users in the "news" group to gain privileges via a long -c command line argument.
The bug was discovered 04/18/2001. The weakness was presented 04/21/2001 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-1442 since 04/21/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
