A vulnerability has been found in MySQL Eventum up to 1.5.4 (Database Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function XML_RPC of the component PEAR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Eval injection vulnerability in PEAR XML_RPC 1.3.0 and earlier (aka XML-RPC or xmlrpc) and PHPXMLRPC (aka XML-RPC For PHP or php-xmlrpc) 1.1 and earlier, as used in products such as (1) WordPress, (2) Serendipity, (3) Drupal, (4) egroupware, (5) MailWatch, (6) TikiWiki, (7) phpWebSite, (8) Ampache, and others, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via an XML file, which is not properly sanitized before being used in an eval statement.
The weakness was published 07/28/2005 by James Bercegay with Gulftech (Website). The advisory is shared for download at dev.mysql.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1921 since 06/08/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at metasploit.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18805 (Slackware 10.0 / 10.1 / 8.1 / 9.0 / 9.1 / current : PHP (SSA:2005-192-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117880 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2005:564)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mysql.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3827. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3618.
