Sun Solaris 7.0/8.0 ximp40 arg0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 7.0/8.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function in the library ximp40. The manipulation of the argument arg0 with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in ximp40 shared library in Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 allows local users to gain privileges via a long "arg0" (process name) argument.

The bug was discovered 01/31/2001. The weakness was shared 05/03/2001 by Shadow (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0165. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 92 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6039), Exploit-DB (20603), SecurityFocus (BID 2322†), OSVDB (1752†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-20441†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
