Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun FTP Server 9 (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument GET/MKDIR/RMDIR/RENAME/PUT with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in SunFTP build 9 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) characters in various commands, including (1) GET, (2) MKDIR, (3) RMDIR, (4) RENAME, or (5) PUT.
The weakness was presented 05/03/2001 by se00020 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0283. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
