Details
A vulnerability was found in Sendmail up to 8.12 (Mail Server Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the component Signal Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Sendmail before 8.11.4, and 8.12.0 before 8.12.0.Beta10, allows local users to cause a denial of service and possibly corrupt the heap and gain privileges via race conditions in signal handlers.
The issue has been introduced in 03/01/2000. The weakness was released 05/28/2001 by Michal Zalewski with BindView (Website). The advisory is shared at razor.bindview.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2001-1349. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 453 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74091 (Sendmail Unsafe Signal Handling Race Condition Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6633), SecurityFocus (BID 2794†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-2793†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
