A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in iWeb Hyperseek 2000. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file hsx.cgi. The manipulation of the argument show with the input value .. leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in hsx.cgi program in iWeb Hyperseek 2000 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files and directories via a .. (dot dot) attack in the show parameter.
The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2001 by ViPeR as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0253. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
