FreeBSD 4.2 UFS/EXT2FS File System race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 4.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component UFS/EXT2FS File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the UFS and EXT2FS file systems in FreeBSD 4.2 and earlier, and possibly other operating systems, makes deleted data available to user processes before it is zeroed out, which allows a local user to access otherwise restricted information.

The bug was discovered 12/22/2000. The weakness was published 03/22/2001 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0371. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 90 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6268), SecurityFocus (BID 2528†), OSVDB (5682†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23307†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
