CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in VIM 5.7. Affected is an unknown function. Such manipulation leads to symlink. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2001-0409. Additionally, an exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in VIM 5.7 (Word Processing Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

vim (aka gvim) allows local users to modify files being edited by other users via a symlink attack on the backup and swap files, when the victim is editing the file in a world writable directory.

The weakness was released 06/18/2001 with SuSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at calderasystems.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0409. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6628), Exploit-DB (20967) and SecurityFocus (BID 2927†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-16795. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
