Windows Media Player 7 and earlier stores Internet shortcuts in a user s Temporary Files folder with a fixed filename instead of in the Internet Explorer cache, which causes the HTML in those shortcuts to run in the Local Computer Zone instead of the Internet Zone, which allows remote attackers to read certain files.
The weakness was released 06/27/2001 with Microsoft as MS01-029 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0243. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
