Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun Solaris 7.0/8.0/9.0/10.0 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component printd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in printd line printer daemon (lpd) in Solaris 7 through 10 allows remote attackers to delete arbitrary files via ".." sequences in an "Unlink data file" command.
The bug was discovered 08/09/2005. The weakness was published 08/09/2005 by H. D. Moore with MetaSploit (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4797 since 05/05/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19449 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 120467-05), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12080. In this case the pattern |0A|U is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4568.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21773), Tenable (19449), SecurityFocus (BID 14510†), OSVDB (18650†) and Secunia (SA16367†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
