A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP 4.0.5 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects the function mail. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PHP 4.0.5 through 4.1.0 in safe mode does not properly cleanse the 5th parameter to the mail() function, which allows local users and possibly remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters.
The weakness was presented 06/30/2001 by Joost Pol (Website). The advisory is shared at iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1246. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
