Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.4.0/2.4.1/2.4.2/2.4.3 (Operating System). This issue affects the function ip_conntrack_ftp of the component iptables. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
ip_conntrack_ftp in the IPTables firewall for Linux 2.4 allows remote attackers to bypass access restrictions for an FTP server via a PORT command that lists an arbitrary IP address and port number, which is added to the RELATED table and allowed by the firewall.
The weakness was released 07/02/2001 by Lincoln (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0405. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/25/2024). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13886 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2001:071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
