FreeBSD 4.0/4.1/4.2/4.3 Signal exec privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FreeBSD 4.0/4.1/4.2/4.3 (Operating System). This affects the function exec of the component Signal Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

FreeBSD 4.3 does not properly clear shared signal handlers when executing a process, which allows local users to gain privileges by calling rfork with a shared signal handler, having the child process execute a setuid program, and sending a signal to the child.

The weakness was disclosed 07/10/2001 by Georgi Guninski as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2001-1180. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6829), SecurityFocus (BID 3007†), OSVDB (1897†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22763†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
