Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.5 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function xdr_xcode_array2 of the component XDR Array Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the xdr_xcode_array2 function in xdr.c in Linux kernel 2.6.12, as used in SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9, might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted XDR data for the nfsacl protocol.
The bug was discovered 08/12/2005. The weakness was presented 08/12/2005 by Florian Weimer with SuSE (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2500 since 08/08/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21805), SecurityFocus (BID 14470†), OSVDB (18701†), Secunia (SA16406†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29212†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
