LBL tcpdump 3.6.2 AFS RPC Packet print-rx.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in LBL tcpdump 3.6.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file print-rx.c of the component AFS RPC Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in print-rx.c of tcpdump 3.x (probably 3.6x) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via AFS RPC packets with invalid lengths that trigger an integer signedness error, a different vulnerability than CVE-2000-1026.

The weakness was released 07/17/2001 by Nick Cleaton as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1279. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13938 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : tcpdump (MDKSA-2002:032)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7006), Tenable (13938) and SecurityFocus (BID 3065†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
