Linux Kernel up to 2.6.12 on x86-64bit ELF File syscall32_setup_pages access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel on x86-64bit (Operating System). This affects the function syscall32_setup_pages of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel 2.6.x does not properly restrict socket policy access to users with the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability, which could allow local users to conduct unauthorized activities via (1) ipv4/ip_sockglue.c and (2) ipv6/ipv6_sockglue.c.

The bug was discovered 08/25/2005. The weakness was presented 08/25/2005 with Linux Kernel Team (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2555 since 08/16/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 607 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21943 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2005:514)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117852 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:663)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21993), Tenable (21943), SecurityFocus (BID 14609†), OSVDB (18978†) and Secunia (SA16494†). See VDB-1234, VDB-1288, VDB-1289 and VDB-1290 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
