Vulnerability in authentication process for SMTP service in Microsoft Windows 2000 allows remote attackers to use incorrect credentials to gain privileges and conduct activites such as mail relaying.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 08/14/2001 by Joao Gouveia with Microsoft as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0504. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
