A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Chris Sullo Nikto up to 1.35. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Web Server Reply HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Nikto 1.35 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the Server field in an HTTP response header, which is directly injected into an HTML report.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2005. The weakness was published 09/02/2005 by Mariano Nunez Di Croce with Cybsec (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cybsec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2860 since 09/08/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cirt.net. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.
