A vulnerability was found in Surf-Net ASP Forum up to 2.29 (Forum Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Session Cookie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Surf-Net ASP Forum before 2.30 uses easily guessable cookies based on the UserID, which allows remote attackers to gain administrative privileges by calculating the value of the admin cookie (UserID 1), i.e. "0888888."

The bug was discovered 08/20/2001. The weakness was presented 08/31/2001 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0972. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
