Apache with mod_rewrite enabled on most UNIX systems allows remote attackers to bypass RewriteRules by inserting extra / (slash) characters into the requested path, which causes the regular expression in the RewriteRule to fail.
The weakness was presented 08/31/2001 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1072. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
