The Log Viewer function in the Check Point FireWall-1 GUI for Solaris 3.0b through 4.1 SP2 does not check for the existence of .log files when saving files, which allows (1) remote authenticated users to overwrite arbitrary files ending in .log , or (2) local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.
The weakness was disclosed 09/08/2001 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1101. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
Applying the patch SP4 is able to eliminate this problem.
