A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Bugzilla up to 2.14 (Bug Tracking Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the file process_bug.cgi/show_activity.cgi/showvotes.cgi/showdependencytree.cgi/showdependencygraph.cgi/showattachment.cgi/describecomponents.cgi. The manipulation of the argument Bug ID with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Bugzilla before 2.14 does not properly restrict access to confidential bugs, which could allow Bugzilla users to bypass viewing permissions via modified bug id parameters in (1) process_bug.cgi, (2) show_activity.cgi, (3) showvotes.cgi, (4) showdependencytree.cgi, (5) showdependencygraph.cgi, (6) showattachment.cgi, or (7) describecomponents.cgi.
The weakness was shared 09/10/2001 by David Miller (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1401. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86207 (Mozilla BugZilla ShowDependencyTree.cgi Restricted Bug Comments Revealing Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.14 eliminates this vulnerability.
