A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise 5.5/6.0 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file /servlet/webacc?user.html. The manipulation with the input value .. leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Novell GroupWise 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a request for /servlet/webacc?User.html= that contains "../" (dot dot) sequences and a null character.

The weakness was shared 10/15/2001 with Foundstone as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-1458 since 04/21/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10789 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86267 (Novell GroupWise Arbitrary File Retrieval Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
