Sun Solaris 8.0 xlock XFILESEARCHPATH/XUSERFILESEARCHPATH memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun Solaris 8.0 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component xlock. The manipulation of the argument XFILESEARCHPATH/XUSERFILESEARCHPATH as part of a Environment Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap overflow in xlock in Solaris 2.6 through 8 allows local users to gain root privileges via a long (1) XFILESEARCHPATH or (2) XUSERFILESEARCHPATH environmental variable.

The bug was discovered 08/10/2001. The weakness was published 10/30/2001 by NSFocus Security Team with NSFOCUS Security Team as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2001-0652. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 81 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3470.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6967), Exploit-DB (21058), SecurityFocus (BID 3160†), OSVDB (1924†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-20828†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
