A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Exchange 2000 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as problematic. Outlook Web Access (OWA) in Microsoft Exchange 2000 allows an authenticated user to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a malformed OWA request for a deeply nested folder within the user s mailbox.
The weakness was published 10/30/2001 by Joao Gouveia as MS01-049 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2001-0666. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74153 (Microsoft Exchange 2000 OWA Nested Requests Can Consume Server CPU Availability (MS01-049)).
