Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in IDS. This affects an unknown function of the component Encoded URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Various Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) including (1) Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System, (2) Cisco Catalyst 6000 Intrusion Detection System Module, (3) Dragon Sensor 4.x, (4) Snort before 1.8.1, (5) ISS RealSecure Network Sensor 5.x and 6.x before XPU 3.2, and (6) ISS RealSecure Server Sensor 5.5 and 6.0 for Windows, allow remote attackers to evade detection of HTTP attacks via non-standard "%u" Unicode encoding of ASCII characters in the requested URL.
The weakness was disclosed 10/30/2001 by eEye Digital Security with eEye Digital Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2001-0669. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (6995), Exploit-DB (21100), SecurityFocus (BID 3292†), OSVDB (4443†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7311†). The entries VDB-503, VDB-15495, VDB-16074 and VDB-16156 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
