A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Sendmail 8.12.1 (Mail Server Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Configuration File. The manipulation of the argument -C with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Sendmail before 8.12.1 does not properly drop privileges when the -C option is used to load custom configuration files, which allows local users to gain privileges via malformed arguments in the configuration file whose names contain characters with the high bit set, such as (1) macro names that are one character long, (2) a variable setting which is processed by the setoption function, or (3) a Modifiers setting which is processed by the getmodifiers function.
The weakness was shared 10/30/2001 by Michal Zalewski with BindView (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at razor.bindview.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0713. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11086 (Sendmail -C Malformed Configuration Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SMTP problems and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74090 (Sendmail Inadequate Privilege Lowering Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 8.12.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
