A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cooolsoft PowerFTP 2.03. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Command Handler. The manipulation of the argument LS/GET with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Cooolsoft PowerFTP Server 2.03 allows attackers to list or read arbitrary files and directories via a .. (dot dot) in (1) LS or (2) GET.
The weakness was disclosed 11/28/2001 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0931. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
