Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Red Hat Linux 7.2 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file LOW_POWER of the component Apmd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
apmscript in Apmd in Red Hat 7.2 "Enigma" allows local users to create or change the modification dates of arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the LOW_POWER temporary file, which could be used to cause a denial of service, e.g. by creating /etc/nologin and disabling logins.
The issue has been introduced in 10/22/2001. The weakness was published 12/04/2001 by Enrico Scholz as Bug 56389 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0946. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 43 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (8268) and OSVDB (5493†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
