Outlook Web Access (OWA) in Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server, when used with Internet Explorer, does not properly detect certain inline script, which can allow remote attackers to perform arbitrary actions on a user s Exchange mailbox via an HTML e-mail message.

The weakness was disclosed 12/01/2001 by Lex Arquette with WhiteHat Security as MS01-057 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0726. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 50038 (Microsoft OWA Server Embedded Script Execution Vulnerability (MS01-057)).

Applying the patch MS01-057 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
