A vulnerability was found in ht: and Dig up to 3.1.5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Config File Handler. htsearch CGI program in htdig (ht://Dig) 3.1.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to use the -c option to specify an alternate configuration file, which could be used to (1) cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by specifying a large file such as /dev/zero, or (2) read arbitrary files by uploading an alternate configuration file that specifies the target file.

The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2001 by Geoff (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0834. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13896 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : htdig (MDKSA-2001:083)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10407 (ht://Dig Remote Denial of Service/File Disclosure Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 3.1.5-8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1600. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 778.
