A vulnerability classified as critical was found in University of Cambridge Exim 3.22 (Mail Server Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Pipe Handler. Exim 3.22 and earlier, in some configurations, does not properly verify the local part of an address when redirecting the address to a pipe, which could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters.
The weakness was presented 12/19/2001 by Philip Hazel as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2001-0889. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
