ProFTPD 1.2.1 Wildcard Character glob memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ProFTPD 1.2.1 (File Transfer Software). Affected is the function glob of the component Wildcard Character Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The glob functionality in ProFTPD 1.2.1, and possibly other versions allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via commands with large numbers of wildcard and other special characters, as demonstrated using an ls command with multiple (1) "*/..", (2) "*/.*", or (3) ".*./*?/" sequences in the argument.

The weakness was published 12/31/2001 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at distro.conectiva.com.br. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2001-1501 since 06/21/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13913 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : proftpd (MDKSA-2002:005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27369 (ProFTPD GLOB Functionality Denial Of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2170.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (7818), Exploit-DB (20690), Tenable (13913), SecurityFocus (BID 6341†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1728†). Similar entry is available at VDB-17819. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
