A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Exchange 2000 (Groupware Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component SMTP Collaboration Data Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in Collaboration Data Objects (CDO), as used in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Exchange Server, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code when CDOSYS or CDOEX processes an e-mail message with a large header name, as demonstrated using the "Content-Type" string.
The weakness was published 10/11/2005 by Gary O’leary-Steele with Sec-1 as MS05-048 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. Applying the patch MS05-048 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12423.
