A vulnerability was found in Sun Java Runtime Environment up to 4.x (Programming Language Software) and classified as very critical. Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Bytecode Verifier allows remote attackers to escape the Java sandbox and execute commands via an applet containing an illegal cast operation, as seen in (1) Microsoft VM build 3802 and earlier as used in Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x, (2) Netscape 6.2.1 and earlier, and possibly other implementations that use vulnerable versions of SDK or JDK, aka a variant of the "Virtual Machine Verifier" vulnerability.
The weakness was disclosed 03/19/2002 by Sun Microsystems and Inc. with Sun Microsystems, Inc. as MS02-013 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0076. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90166 (Microsoft VM Cumulative Update Not Installed (MS02-013)).
Applying the patch MS02-013 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
