A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in EMC NetWorker 6.1. This issue affects an unknown function of the file daemon.log. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cleartext storage vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-312. The product stores sensitive information in cleartext within a resource that might be accessible to another control sphere. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. EMC NetWorker (formerly Legato NetWorker) before 7.0 stores passwords in plaintext in the daemon.log file, which allows local users to gain privileges by reading the password from the file. NOTE: this was originally reported for Legato NetWorker 6.1 on the Solaris 7 platform.
The bug was discovered 01/10/2002. The weakness was released 03/25/2002 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at online.securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0114. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1555 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:daemon.log it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56496 (FreeBSD : nwclient -- multiple vulnerabilities (d177d9f9-e317-11d9-8088-00123f0f7307)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68506 (Legato NetWorker Plaintext Log File Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
