Details
A vulnerability was found in Andreas Mueller CDRDAO 1.1.4/1.1.5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file $HOME/.cdrdao of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
CDRDAO 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the $HOME/.cdrdao configuration file.
The bug was discovered 01/15/2001. The weakness was shared 03/25/2002 by Jens Steube as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0137. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 434 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18305 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : cdrdao (MDKSA-2005:089)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
