CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Logwatch 2.5. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Temp File Handler. Such manipulation leads to symlink. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-0162. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Logwatch 2.5. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Temp File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

LogWatch before 2.5 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a symlink attack on the logwatch temporary directory.

The weakness was shared 03/27/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0162. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370413 (LogWatch Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 2.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (8652), Exploit-DB (21356), SecurityFocus (BID 4374†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44840†). The entry VDB-18057 is related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
